You walk into a dark room and flip the switch. The room appears.
The walls, the furniture, the dust on the windowsill. All of it was there before. None of it was visible.
The light did not make the room. The light let the room be seen.
Now ask a different question.
What is letting the light be seen.
You will say, my eyes. Or, the surface it reflects from. Or, the contrast between the lit and the unlit.
These are all true and none of them touches the thing.
What is letting the seeing happen.
You cannot point at it. You cannot turn it on. You cannot find the switch.
And yet seeing is happening.
The light has light. The seeing does not need to be lit.
There is something that is making everything appear, and it does not itself appear.
The Tibetan teachers call this clear light. Not a metaphor. A direct description of what is happening when you are aware of anything at all.
Something is shining. The shining has no source.
The Sanskrit word is prabha. Splendor. Radiance. The luminosity of awareness itself.
It is not added to experience.
It is what experience is made of.
You can verify this without believing anything.
Look at the room you are in. Notice that it is appearing.
The appearing is not something the room is doing. It is not something your eyes are doing. The room and the eyes are appearing inside it.
The appearing is prior.
The room shows up in it. The eyes show up in it. The thought I am seeing the room shows up in it.
There is no one outside the appearing looking at it.
The appearing appears to itself.
This is harder to notice than it should be, because the mind keeps trying to locate it.
It looks for the appearing the way it would look for a flashlight. Where is it. What is it made of. Who turned it on.
The looking is the appearing.
You cannot find the flashlight because you are the beam.
Longchenpa wrote about this. He said the nature of awareness is empty in essence and luminous in nature. Two qualities of one thing.
Empty, because no thing can be found.
Luminous, because something is shining anyway.
You can sit and verify both at once.
Look for the looker. You will not find one. Empty.
Notice that looking is happening. Something is shining. Luminous.
The empty and the luminous are not two things.
They are the same thing seen from two sides.
The fact that no looker can be found is the fact that the looking is unobstructed.
If there were a looker, the looking would have a center. It would be coming from somewhere.
The seeing would be located behind the eyes, like a small person watching a screen.
You have probably believed this your whole life.
But the small person cannot be found.
And the seeing is happening anyway, with no one behind it.
The seeing is everywhere the seen is.
There is no separation between the looking and the looked at.
A bird crosses the window. The bird is being seen.
Where is the seeing.
Not in your eyes. The eyes are also being seen, if you look down at the cheek.
Not in your head. The sense of having a head is also a thing that appears.
The seeing has no location.
It is wherever the bird is.
The light is not coming from inside you.
The light is what you are inside of.
This is the inversion the mind has been resisting.
You have been thinking awareness is something you have. A faculty. A capacity. A flashlight inside the skull.
Awareness is what has you.
You appear in it the way the room appears in the light.
The room did not turn on the light. The light let the room be seen.
You did not turn on awareness. Awareness let you be experienced.
Notice the breath arriving.
The breath is being known. The knowing is not coming from somewhere. It is the medium the breath shows up in.
The breath ends. The knowing continues.
Another breath arrives.
The knowing did not need to be relit. It was already going.
The light that does not need to be lit is the light by which all the lit things are seen.
You cannot study this from outside. There is no outside.
You cannot turn toward it. There is no away from it to turn from.
You can only stop pretending you are something other than it.
The mind will say this is mystical. It will say this is poetic. It will say this is a beautiful idea.
It is not an idea.
It is what is happening right now, while the mind is reading.
The reading is appearing.
The mind that is calling it poetic is appearing.
The judgment that the appearing is poetic is appearing.
All of it shining, with no source.
You are not the source.
You never were.
You have been a small bright thing inside a much larger shining, pretending the shining belonged to you.
Let it not belong to you for a moment.
The room is still lit.
You are not the one lighting it.
When you stand up the lighting will continue.
The walk to the kitchen will be lit. The pouring will be lit. The conversation later will be lit.
You will not have to do any of the lighting.
You never have.
The light does not need to be lit.
It was already what you were looking by.
