You think you have to turn toward a sound to hear it.

Sit for a moment and notice what is already arriving. The hum of something in the wall. A car somewhere outside, getting smaller. The small sound of your own swallowing.

None of this waited for you to point at it.

The hearing was happening before you decided to listen. The room was full of sound the whole time you were thinking about something else.

You do not have to do anything for hearing to happen. You never did.

What you call listening is just the moment you noticed what was already coming in.

The ear is open all night while you sleep. It does not close. It cannot close. It has been receiving the world without your permission since the day you were born.

You are not the one who hears.

You are what hearing happens in.
